Bethany is full of solid mid-century homes that have good bones and dated finishes — which is one of the best combinations to work with. Most of what we do here is replacing worn carpet and sheet vinyl with luxury vinyl plank or laminate, updating tired bathrooms, and tiling kitchen backsplashes that have not been touched since the original build.

The common thread in homes from this era is the subfloor. Plywood on joists that have carried sixty years of traffic is rarely flat, and older sheet vinyl was frequently installed over particleboard underlayment that has since softened. We pull it, check what is underneath, and replace the underlayment where it will not hold a fastener anymore. That step is not glamorous, but it determines whether the new floor is still tight in five years.

For bathrooms, we see a lot of original cast-iron tubs that are still perfectly serviceable and a lot of tub surrounds that are not. Converting to a walk-in shower is the single most requested change, and it is straightforward here because the plumbing is generally accessible from a crawlspace or an adjacent closet wall.
